Aromatherapy Bath Salt Recipe

Ingredients:

3 cups Dead Sea salt, regular sea salt or Epsom salt, or a blend of two or three of these salts. Sea salts typically come in several grain sizes. Combining multiple grain sizes can make your salts more appealing. Keep in mind, however, that more course grains do take longer to dissolve in the tub.

15-24 drops of your selected essential oil or essential oil blend. Be sure and take heed in the safety data for the oil(s) you choose to use.

1 tablespoon fractionated coconut oil or other carrier oil for moisturization (optional)

Directions:

Place the salt mixture into a bowl. If you have chosen to include the optional vegetable oil to your salt recipe, add it to the plain salts and mix well with a spoon or fork. Then, add the drops of your chosen essential oils. Again, mix very well. Add the mixture to a pretty jar, salt tube, or container that has a tight fitting lid. Salts that are kept in a container that is not air tight will lose their aroma more quickly.

After a day, you may wish to mix well again to ensure that the oils are well incorporated.

To Color to Your Salts:

For the most natural bath salt recipe, leave your bath salts uncolored. Certain exotic salts including Hawaiian Red Sea salt and Black Sea Pink salt are naturally colorful. Try mixing these salts with with Dead Sea or plain sea salt for a speckled effect.

If you would like to add color to your salts, FD&C liquid dye or mica powder can be added before you add the essential oils. When adding FD&C grade liquid dye, be sure to add only a drop at a time and stir well. When adding mica powder, only add a tiny amount (1/16-1/8 a teaspoon is usually sifficient) and stir very well. Using too much dye or mica powder can discolor the water and discolor skin, so be very careful. Leave bath salts at a soft pastel color. It is also important that you make sure that you are using skin-safe colorants and that the user of your bath salt blend does not have any allergies or sensitizations with the colorant that you have chosen.

To Use:

Add 1/2-1 cup of the salts to running bath water. Mix well to ensure that the salt has dispersed well in the tub before entering. To keep the essential oils from evaporating too quickly, you can add the bath salts just before getting in the tub instead of while the water is running. Sitting on undissolved chunky bath salts, however, can be uncomfortable, so make sure the salts have dissolved well before entering.

Flax Seed Q & A

Can you heat it? Is it better ground or whole? How can flax seed benefit me? Answers to these and other common flax seed questions below:

Do I have to buy the oil refrigerated?

Since flax oil is prone to becoming rancid, you’ll usually find it in the refrigerated section at your natural products grocer. Some products are on the shelves; as long as they’re vacuum-sealed, the oils should be fine. Store opened flax oil in your refrigerator.

Do I have to grind the seeds before eating them?

Yes. Grinding the seeds makes the protein, fiber, and fatty acids more available to the body. The easiest way to grind whole flax seeds is in a coffee grinder (then store them in the refrigerator). The whole seeds can also be soaked in water for 8 hours, then drunk with the water to act as a soothing laxative.

Can I buy them already ground?

It’s better to grind them at home, just before you use them, to ensure that the oils are fresh. But you can purchase preground flax in vacuum-sealed containers, which protect the oils. Store them in the refrigerator once opened.

Is it OK to cook with flax oil?

Not really. Heating damages the essential fatty acids in flax. It’s best to drizzle uncooked flax oil over foods after cooking.

What about the seeds?

Does cooking destroy the healthful fats? The seeds are relatively stable and can be used in baking without damage, but higher heat cooking could damage them.

What’s the difference between golden and brown flax seeds?

They’re different varieties; golden flax seed has a more nutty, buttery flavor than brown, but both have the same nutritional content.

What’s the best way to eat flax?

Grind the seeds in a coffee mill, and sprinkle them over cereals and into smoothies, or add them to baked goods. Drizzle the oil over salads, cooked vegetables, or grains, or use it as the base for salad dressings.

Here are just a few of products that LightWay Nutrition's sports line offers:

L-Carnitine Liquid

Anyone committed to a healthy lifestyle understands absorption is essential. Which is why Light Way Nutrition's Liquid L-Carnitine delivers 1000 mg of the highest potency L-Carnitine available today. And while small amounts of this crucial amino acid can be found in red meats and dairy products, supplementation has been used and trusted by people from every walk of life. Known for its cellular energy boosting and post workout recovery properties, Liquid L-Carnitine serves as an excellent addition to your healthy lifestyle.

Amino Complete

Our Amino Complete formula provides 1000mg of our balanced blend of the following essential and non-essential amino acids per capsule: L-Alanine, L-Arginine, L-Aspartic Acid, L-Carnitine, L-Cysteine, L-Glutamic Acid, L-Glycine, L-Histidine, L-Isoleucine, L-Leucine, L-Lysine, L-Methionine, L-Ornithine, L-Phenylalanine, L-Proline, L-Serine, L-Threonine, L-Tryptophan, L-Tyrosine and L-Valine. This proprietary blend of amino acids is sourced from Soy Protein Isolate, Predigested Casein and Lactalbumin, Carnitine, Ornithine and Gelatin.

Branched-Chain Amino Acids

The Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAA) include valine, leucine and isoleucine. These particular amino acids are important for protein synthesis, which helps preserve muscle tissue during exercise. A problem many bodybuilders experience is a state called catabolism. Catabolism usually occurs during intense training, when bodybuilders try to increase lean muscle tissue while burning fat. The body begins to break down and burn muscle tissue in addition to, or in the absence of, fat. This condition is also called muscle wasting. By increasing protein synthesis, BCAA's help to promote anabolic balance in muscle tissue, keeping it from being broken down. A high-quality BCAA supplement is key, as many BCAA's on the market are inferior quality and offer little benefit. LightWay Nutrition's Branched-Chain Amino Acids are Pharmaceutical (USP) Grade. BCAA's are essential amino acids that cannot be synthesized by the body. They must be obtained from the diet, which makes supplementation important.

L-Glutamine

The amino acid glutamine is one of the most important for active individuals. It's found in muscle tissue and is necessary for the synthesis and maintenance of skeletal muscle protein. It's also a nitrogen transporter, helping to maintain normal ammonia levels in the body by moving the nitrogen produced during amino acid breakdown to the liver for conversion into urea, a non-toxic substance easily removed from the body. Bodybuilders should make sure they've got plenty of glutamine in their system, since physical and mental stress can deplete levels, which can cause muscle wasting. An absolute must for workout warriors.

Whey Protein

Our Whey Protein is a delicious blend of three of the highest quality whey protein concentrates and isolates from around the world: Micro-Filtered, Ion-Exchanged and Enzymatically Hydrolyzed (partially predigested). This blend of specially processed whey proteins is designed to maximize amino acid absorption and Biological Value (BV). Extra L-Glutamine has been added (460 mg per serving) because of its important role in protecting muscle tissue from breaking down under stressful, vigorous physical activity. We offer two great tasting flavors - Chocolate and Vanilla - that mix easily in both water and milk. LightWay Nutrition's Whey Protein is formulated to help our customers achieve an anabolic state crucial to bodybuilding success. Low carbs, high protein, high quality.

Tribulus 1000 mg

Tribulus terrestris is a perennial trailing plant that grows predominantly in India and Africa. Tribulus is mentioned in ancient Indian Ayurvedic medical texts dating back thousands of years, and was commonly used as a traditional herbal, most notably as an aphrodisiac and for infertility. This synergistic blend supports healthy male hormonal levels and may enhance sexual performance.

Pyruvate
Calcium Pyruvate is a natural combination of two important nutrients, Calcuim and Pyruvic Acid, that produces a stable compound called pyruvate salt. Pyruvateis more easily absorbed than calcium alone and plays a crucial role in energy production by facilitating the transport of clucose from the bloodstream into the muscles. Many fitness enthusiasts make Pyruvate art of their nutrition regimen for one reason - it works!

Natural Insect Repellent Solutions

You can make natural insect repellent yourself. The insect repellent is safe and effective, plus it costs much less to make it than to buy it.

There are a few different formulations you can make for your natural insect repellent. These repellents involve diluting essential oils that the insects find distasteful or which confuses them. The oils don't mix with water, so you'll need to add them to other oils or to alcohol. It's important to use an oil or alcohol that is safe for your skin. Also, don't go overboard with the essential oils. The oils are potent and could cause skin irritation or another reaction if you use too much. If you are pregnant or nursing, do not apply an insect repellent, natural or otherwise, until after you've gotten it cleared by your physician.

Natural Insect Repellent Ingredients

Different insects are repelled by different chemicals, so you'll get a more effective repellent if you combine a few different insect-repelling natural oils. If you are making large amounts of insect repellent, a good rule of thumb is to mix the repellent so it's 5-10% essential oil, so mix 1 part essential oil with 10-20 parts carrier oil or alcohol. For a smaller batch use:

· 10-25 drops (total) of essential oils
· 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil or alcohol

The essential oils that work well against biting insects (mosquitoes, flies, ticks, fleas) are:

· cinnamon oil (mosquitoes)
· lemon eucalyptus or regular eucalyptus oil (mosquitoes, ticks, and lice)
· citronella oil (mosquitoes and biting flies)
· castor oil (mosquitoes)
· orange oil (fleas)
· rose geranium (ticks and lice)

Safe carrier oils and alcohols include:

· olive oil
· sunflower oil
· any other cooking oil
· witch hazel
· vodka

Natural Insect Repellent Recipe

Mix the essential oil with the carrier oil or alcohol. Rub or spray the natural insect repellent onto skin or clothing, using care to avoid the sensitive eye area. You'll need to re-apply the natural product after about an hour or after swimming or exercise. Unused natural insect repellent may be stored in a dark bottle, away from heat or sunlight. If you wish, you may combine the oil with aloe vera gel to change the consistency of the product.

Plants that Help to Repel Mosquitoes

Catnip
Catnip is an herb that is most commonly used to stuff in toys or feed to cats for their enjoyment. However, the oil from this plant has actually been found to be more than ten times better at repelling mosquitoes than DEET. Planting this plant near your patio or deck will help repel mosquitoes.

Rosemary
This garden herb also has an oil that repels mosquitoes. While they are attractive plants that both repel mosquitoes and can add interest to your cooking, they are truly tropical plants that are not hardy in cold climates. You can, however, grow rosemary in a pot and take it inside in the winter.

Marigolds
Marigolds have a particular smell that many insects and humans find objectionable. They are a good plant for repelling mosquitoes as well as insects that can attack vegetable plants and aphids. Marigolds are annuals with bright flowers that range from lemon yellow to dark oranges and reds.

Mosquito Plants
There are actually plants on the market that are simply called Mosquito plants. They are advertised as a plant that repels mosquitoes. There are different schools of thoughts on these plants. Some say they do nothing to repel mosquitoes, while other swear by them. More often than not, you can only find them through mail order and internet sales.

Planting these plants that repel mosquitoes is a great choice for your yard. Not only is it an earth-friendly way of dealing with these pests, it will add beauty to your gardens, and will not jeopardize your health.

Importance of Water During Exercise

Water is the most essential key to a healthy life. Water has many important functions in the body including:

· Transportation of nutrients / elimination of waste products.
· Lubricating joints and tissues.
· Temperature regulation through sweating.
· Facilitating digestion.

Importance of Water During Exercise

Proper hydration is especially important during exercise. Adequate fluid intake for athletes is essential to comfort, performance and safety. The longer and more intensely you exercise, the more important hydration becomes. Also what and when athletes drink is just as important and depends upon exercise duration and intensity. That is why it is important it is to drink the right kind of fluids to keep everything is balance and running at peak performance. Improper fluid intake can lead to a multitude of problems.

Dehydration
Athletes need to stay hydrated for optimal performance. Studies have found that a loss of two or more percent of one's body weight due to sweating is linked to a drop in blood volume. When this occurs, the heart works harder to move blood through the bloodstream. This can also cause muscle cramps, dizziness and fatigue and even heat related illness including:

· Heat Exhaustion
· Heat Stroke

What Causes Dehydration?

· Inadequate fluid intake
· Excessive sweating
· Failure to replace fluid losses during and after exercise
· Exercising in dry, hot weather
· Drinking only when thirsty

Hyponatremia- Water Intoxication

Although rare, recreational exercisers are also at risk of drinking too much water and suffering from hyponatremia or water intoxication. Clearly, drinking the right amount of the right fluids is critical for performance and safety while exercising.

Adequate Fluid Intake for Athletes

Because there is wide variability in sweat rates, losses and hydration levels of individuals, it is nearly impossible to provide specific recommendations or guidelines about the type or amount of fluids athletes should consume. However, finding the right amount of fluid to drink depends upon a variety of individual factors including the length and intensity of exercise and other individual differences.

We have found that there are, however, two simple methods of estimating adequate hydration:

1. Monitoring urine volume output and color. A large amount of light colored, diluted urine probably means you are hydrated; dark colored, concentrated urine probably means you are dehydrated.

2. Weighing yourself before and after exercise. Any weight lost is likely from fluid, so try to drink enough to replenish those losses. Any weight gain could mean you are drinking more than you need.

Things that Can Affect Fluid Loss in Athletes

· High altitude. Exercising at altitude increases your fluid losses and therefore increases you fluid needs.

· Temperature. Exercising in the heat increases you fluid losses through sweating and exercise in the cold can impair you ability to recognize fluid losses and increase fluid lost through respiration. That is why it is important to hydrate in both cases.

· Sweating. Some athletes sweat more than others. If you sweat a lot you are at greater risk for dehydration. Again, weigh yourself before and after exercise to judge sweat loss.

· Exercise Duration and Intensity. Exercising for hours (endurance sports) means you need to drink more and more frequently to avoid dehydration.

According to the Institute of Medicine the need for carbohydrate and electrolytes replacement during exercise depends on exercise intensity, duration, weather and individual differences in sweat rates. [They write, "fluid replacement beverages might contain ~20–30 meqILj1 sodium (chloride as the anion), ~2–5 meqILj1 potassium and ~5–10% carbohydrate."] Sodium and potassium are to help replace sweat electrolyte losses, and sodium also helps to stimulate thirst. Carbohydrate provides energy for exercise over 60-90 minutes. This can also be provided through energy gels, bars, and other foods.

What about Sports Drinks?
Sports drinks can be helpful to athletes who are exercising at a high intensity for 60 minutes or more. Fluids supplying 60 to 100 calories per 8 ounces helps to supply the needed calories required for continuous performance. It's really not necessary to replace losses of sodium, potassium and other electrolytes during exercise since you're unlikely to deplete your body's stores of these minerals during normal training. If, however, you find yourself exercising in extreme conditions over 3 or 5 hours (a marathon, Ironman or ultramarathon, for example) you may likely want to add a complex sports drink with electrolytes.

General Guidelines for Fluid Needs During Exercise

While specific fluid recommendations aren't possible due to individual variability, most athletes can use the following guidelines as a starting point, and modify their fluid needs accordingly.

Hydration Before Exercise

· Drink about 15-20 fl oz, 2-3 hours before exercise
· Drink 8-10 fl oz 10-15 min before exercise

Hydration During Exercise

· Drink 8-10 fl oz every 10-15 min during exercise
· If exercising longer than 90 minutes, drink 8-10 fl oz of a sports drink (with no more than 8 percent carbohydrate) every 15 - 30 minutes.

Hydration After Exercise

· Weigh yourself before and after exercise and replace fluid losses.
· Drink 20-24 fl oz water for every 1 lb lost.
· Consume a 4:1 ratio of carbohydrate to protein within the 2 hours after exercise to replenish glycogen stores.

Ionic Foot Bath Detox

Ionic Foot Bath Detox...

An Alternative Solution for your Overall Health & Well-Being

As part of our usual body functionality we naturally detoxify every day. Eliminating toxins and waste via our kidneys, liver, colon, lymph, glands, lungs and skin. Toxins can be found in our everyday environment; tobacco, alcohol, food additives, drugs and anaesthetics, pesticides, heavy metals and industrial pollutants. We need our body to function optimally and rid our systems of these toxins as they are harmful waste products that attack our immune system and can cause a wide variety of side effects, including lethargy and tiredness, headaches and migraines, colds and flu, bad skin, breath and body odor problems, sinus problems, the list goes on. In fact, some theory exists suggesting that detoxification may be at some point an alternative to the prevention of immune deficiency diseases.

Our body is a very complex piece of engineering, and in its simplest form is a collection of cells and tissue. Cells consist of electrical charges and ideally contain an even proportion of positive and negative ions. In this “ideal” state we are perfectly balanced and our body functions by removing toxins and absorbing nutrients from food, water and oxygen. When the body experiences any form of trauma, which can be caused by poor diet, ill health or injury, the cells become more positively charged and consequently do not work as effectively and the process of storing toxins begins. Even a lack of exercise promotes toxic build up as our cells are insufficiently oxidized. Therefore stagnation of our natural detoxification process occurs.

The Ionic Foot Bath Detox starts the process of rebalancing your body’s bioenergy. By producing negative ions, it effectively rebalances the cells equilibrium of positive and negative ions which, in turn ‘kick starts’ the dispersal of unwanted toxins.

The Process

The relaxing 30 minute treatment involves placing your feet into a spa bowl filled with warm saline solution. An Energizing Ionic Cartridge is then placed in the bowl that creates a flow of electrons and bioenergetic field that provides a relaxing and enjoyable treatment. The feet have an amazing 2000 pores each foot and therefore offer one of the best points to administer the treatment which is both efficient and convenient. The Ionic Foot Bath Detox rebalances and harmonizes by sending signals up through the lymph glands to stimulate the detox process.

At first you might notice a slight color change that is due to the current affecting the saline. As the process continues and toxins are drawn out of the body, the water may turn darker. Deposits may surface on top of the water. This, also, is due to the toxin removal process. At the end, you should feel more energized and balanced. Occasionally, people will feel somewhat drained at the end of the process. Much depends on the amount of toxins drawn from the body.

Why Should We Detox?

Toxins constantly bombard the human body on a daily basis. In our food there are hormones, pesticides and numerous chemicals. We ingest chemicals in our water if it is not correctly filtered. We take prescription allopathic medications such as antibiotics. If you have had any surgical procedure you now have chemicals in your body stored both in the organs and also on a cellular level. If you smoke, drink caffeine and/or alcohol you have toxins in your body. After a while the organs of excretion (kidneys, liver, lungs, lymphatic system) get overloaded and cannot function properly, leading to poor health and poor quality of life.

· Do you suffer from recurrent colds & flu, insomnia, allergies, unexplained rashes, frequent headaches, fatigue?

· Have you been taking medications?

· Have you been exposed to toxins in your everyday life?

· Do you just feel lousy and not know why?

If you have answered yes to any of the above questions, you may want to think about detoxing. The fewer toxins in the body, the better the quality of life. Understanding the need for periodic detoxing is paramount to realizing good overall health and optimal immune response. See how LightWay Nutrition can help you out.

Way to Detox Daily

By following these simple principles, you can detox daily...

1. Eat like a bird. Check your calorie consumption; most of us eat way more than we need. The less we eat, the fewer toxins we take in. Once or twice a month, try cutting caloric intake to 700 calories for a day for a quick, easy cleanse. A partial fast also works on a psychological level to remind us that we don’t really need that much food to live and thrive.

2. Up your H20. Water is essential for transporting waste and nutrients in the body; divide your weight by two to find the number of ounces of filtered water you should drink daily. And be careful with coffee or tea intake; caffeine can dehydrate the cells, burden the liver, and tax the adrenals. Stick to a cup in the morning. You can even try a cranberry-lemon cocktail to help prevent accumulation of bacteria in the bladder and stimulate the liver: combine 1/4 cup unsweetened cranberry juice concentrate, 1/4 cup lemon juice, and 1/2 to 1 cup water; sweeten to taste with stevia.

3. Go organic. Organic foods are free of pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, hormones, and other chemicals, and organic produce is naturally higher in antioxidants. If you must buy conventional produce, focus on those least likely to be contaminated with pesticide residues: try asparagus, avocado, broccoli, cabbage, pineapple and onions (see foodnews.org/walletguide.php for a complete list). Clean conventional fruits and vegetables in a natural produce wash solution; rinse in a clear water bath for 10 minutes before serving or storing.

4. Get rough. High-fiber foods, such as raw vegetables and most fruits, create intestinal bulk, promote more frequent bowel movements, and help move toxins from the body. Best fiber choices include raspberries, brussels sprouts, broccoli, spinach, and acorn squash; as a bonus, they’re also rich in antioxidants. If you’re still feeling backed up, try 2 teaspoons of psyllium husk in an 8-ounce glass of water before bed or first thing in the morning.

5. Clean your house. No matter how pristine your diet, you may be polluting yourself with household cleaning products. Spray cleaners, dish-washing liquids, and laundry detergents contain chemicals that have been linked to cancer, reproductive disorders, and liver damage. Shampoo, soap, fragrance, and petroleum candles are other offenders. Restock your home with chemical-free cleaners and personal care products, and invest in nontoxic soy or beeswax candles.

6. Cook less. Raw foods are naturally high in fiber, which has a cleansing effect. They’re also loaded with enzymes and healing compounds that have anti-inflammatory effects. The easiest way to eat raw on a regular basis: have a big salad with seven different vegetables every day. Try this one: combine shredded carrots, beets, and red cabbage with diced yellow bell peppers, chopped kale, dandelion greens, and arugula; dress with extra virgin olive oil (bonus: olive oil flushes the gallbladder and keeps the intestines lubricated).

7. Switch your sweetener. Refined sugar in any form encourages the growth of Candida albicans (yeast), which upsets normal intestinal flora and depletes the liver of enzymes needed for detoxification. Use stevia, and feed your sweet tooth with dates stuffed with almonds, or raw fruit. Other dietary demons: Wheat, gluten, dairy, yeast, and corn are highly reactive foods that can set up an inflammatory response.

8. Sweat it out. Physical activity stimulates movement of lymph fluid, oxygenates cells, supports the lungs, and encourages sweating to remove toxins via the skin. And regular exercise promotes the burning of fat, the primary storehouse for toxins. And consider including yoga: the stretches and twists massage internal organs, promoting detox.

9. Feast on artichokes. They’re rich in cyanarin, a compound that helps shore up the liver’s detox pathways. They’re also meager in calories—about 60 in a medium artichoke—and loaded with cleansing fiber. Bitter greens such as dandelion, chicory, Belgian endive, escarole, and radicchio also stimulate liver function. For more detox effects, munch on celery sticks, which have a diuretic function, and liberally sprinkle chopped parsley over food to cleanse the blood, fight bacteria, and boost circulation.

10. Use clean protein. The body needs it—just make sure it’s the right kind and amount. Decrease or eliminate dairy and swear off any animal product that’s not organic. Then eat small portions (2 to 3 ounces) of organic poultry, buffalo, grass-fed beef, eggs, and clean, uncontaminated fish (see the safe seafood list at montereybayaquarium.org). And use fats wisely. When oils are heated, they produce free radicals, heated oils also have a congesting effect on the liver and kidneys, which are critical in detoxing. Most oils are heated during the mechanical pressing used for extraction. Stick with extra virgin olive oil and cold-pressed coconut oil; neither requires any heat to extract the oils.

11. Brush it off. Dry brushing stimulates the lymph system and supports elimination of toxins through the skin. Once a day, lightly brush limbs and torso with a soft-bristled brush, moving toward the heart. Follow with a warm shower or Epsom salts bath. Add a daily sauna or steam to further open pores and remove excreted toxins.

12. Detox your soul. A complete cleanse includes your mental, emotional, and spiritual, as well as your physical, bodies. Check your attitude. Is it light, playful, positive? Or are you hauling around stress, anger, jealousy, and other negative emotions that are toxic to total well-being? Start by cleaning out spiritual toxins from your environment: eliminate negative or violent television, books, people. Then support yourself in cleansing: meditate, read uplifting literature, sing and dance, journal, smile more. Do whatever cleanses and nourishes your soul.

5 Tips for Your Organic Garden

Now that summer is here and many of you we hope are growing Organic Gardens, here are five helpful organic garden tips:

1. Make your own insecticidal spray by filling a spray bottle with water and ½ cup of liquid castile soap. For more of a repellent, add three cloves of finely chopped garlic and let spray stand for an hour before spraying.

2. Use beer as bait for your slugs. They love it so, bury a small bowl of beer in the most visited area and watch them drink. Clean your trap out every two or three days.

3. Grow garlic around your plants as it naturally repels pests.

4. Mail-order beneficial insects like ladybugs and mantis.

5. Create a bird sanctuary with feeders, baths and birdhouses. The birds will gobble up many of the pests and fill your garden with song.
